Long Awkward Pose

Meet Katie Dippold, comedy writer, sketch performer, and camera-prankster extraordinaire. With Long Awkward Pose, Katie asks people to pose for a picture—and then video tapes them instead. How long each subject holds the "cheese!" smile varies from case to case, but the process almost always produces a hysterical clip. We wrote about Katie's candid camera late last year—and we still love her madly. Now, we check in with her about the first long and awkward pose, why she loves "Pranksgiving," and some of her favorite sites online...

How did you first get the idea to fool your subjects into holding the long awkward pose?

I was playing with my new cell phone at my sister's birthday party taking pictures when I realized it had the video option. My mom always poses for pictures with food up her nose (yeah, I know) so I saw an opportunity. Then I immediately bought a digital camera. But I doubt I'm the only jerk who saw a gadget on their camera and figured out how to use it for evil. There are others.

What's your favorite? The one of your dad? Do you have any recent submissions from others that you've particularly loved?

My favorite is John's. I couldn't stop laughing. I lost it when he berated me for not taking the picture and then immediately said "cheese." My favorite submission is "Pranksgiving." That poor nice mom's smile lasted forever and it kills me. I like to consider this a "loving" prank, but I'm sure there are many who would disagree.

We know at least one friend has gotten you with camera/video hoax. Will we ever see that clip?

There are at least 10 of these that exist. I've cursed myself. But I'll put them all up one day. It's only fair.

What are some of your other favorite sites online?

Here are a few: catsthatlooklikehitler.com, phonesexpranks.com, chriskula.com (funny blog—see the walking tours)

And is there anything about running Long Awkward Pose that has surprised you?

I was surprised how far it spread. Australia and Germany are two of the more frequent visitors. I guess the joy of humiliating our loved ones is something the whole world can agree on. OK, I almost put myself to sleep with that one.

Katie, you could never put us to sleep. May the poses stay forever long and awkward!
