Water's Journey: Everglades
"It's this little etching away at the environment a little bit at a time that we don't realize until we step back and look at the cumulative impact of what it leaves us with."—Billy Causey, regional superintendent of the Southeast Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean National Marine Sanctuary Program Water's Journey: Everglades, an online companion to the PBS series of the same name, tells the story of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan—the most ambitious and expensive restoration project attempted in the world. Start at the beginning with a historical timeline of the Everglades. Then view a series of animations showing how the area's man-made and natural systems are interrelated. Now suit up and take a journey through the Everglades, setting out from its headwaters in the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes, and winding up in the coral reefs of Florida Bay. If you're inspired by the project and the delicate balance between natural ecology, farming, and development, take note of the educational resources or ways you can help. It's an easy way to learn about a fascinating natural area without getting your feet wet. (in Science) |
