The 700 Hoboes Project It all started with John Hodgman, "notable non-historian" and author of "The Areas of My Expertise." In that questionable tome, he includes a "comprehensive" catalog of 700 "notable historical hobo names." One thing led to another, and a call went out for the monikers to be illustrated. Cartoonists enlisted, artists of mischievous mind came on board, and an army of doodlers rose to the challenge. Now, all 700 of the list's characters boast at least one portrait. Some, like Bazino, Bazino, The Kid Whose Hair Is on Fire and Mr. Wilson Fancy Pants, scored a record seven. We were quite charmed by the looks of Freak Le Freak, the Freakster. Rex Spangler, the Bedazzler wowed us. And somehow, Foreign Tomas, the Strangetalker lulled us into appreciation. How long will the project continue now that all 700 hoboes sport at least one likeness? We refer that question to Guesstimate Jones. (in Visual Arts) |
