40 Years of Film in New York City Who gave that giant ape permission to climb the Empire State Building? It must have been the New York City Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre, and Broadcasting, which is now celebrating its 40th anniversary with this interactive film location map. Some discoveries buried within: - Woody Allen has filmed outside Manhattan just once, and never above 99th street.
- Spike Lee has shot as far uptown as 138th Street and even ventured into the wilds of Brooklyn.
- Scorsese's more of a downtown guy.
Manhattan, of course, is the most-filmed-in borough, with 188 different locations, followed by Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx (remember "Marty"?), and the underutilized Staten Island, a place where just two films have been set (or one if you don't include the Staten Island Ferry as part of the neighborhood). Then there are the Hoboken scenes from "On the Waterfront," included here even though that town's in New Jersey. C'mon New York! Give Jersey a break! (in Movies and Film > History) |
