Brown Dress Every day for the past year, dancer and activist Alex Martin has refused to change her dress. It's a simple frock in a warm chocolate color, with round white buttons running down the front. But, since July 7, 2005, it has played a principal role in Alex's "one-woman show against fashion" and consumerism. Over the past 365 days, the dress has endured holes, rips, and a perpetually loose waist button. On September 17, Alex took the dress off and temporarily forgot to put it back on (long story). On October 18, someone saw her and shouted, "Hey, that's the brown dress!" On June 20, she realized the pleasures of bicycling pants-free. And now, after this year of never having to waste time wondering what to wear every day and sticking with one item of clothing come freezing rains or high snows (thank goodness for wool legwarmers), Alex will say good-bye to the little brown dress. Happy Un-Dressing, Alex! (in Fashion and Beauty) |
