The Saddest Thing I Own Sadness will attach itself to almost anything: a humpback whale, a specific issue of MAD Magazine, a nasty note from the neighbor downstairs. These, and many more, figure in this online collection of the stuff that makes people blue. All the classic objects of melancholy are here: photos of lost pets, returned engagement rings, and death in many forms. (And prom, of course.) Memories of mothers and fathers crowd these entries. So, intriguingly, do cats. One man writes of an old set of bookshelves that he cobbled together when he was very poor and couldn't afford anything better. Another describes the three-hour Taiwanese movie from Netflix that he can't finish watching, but can't bring himself to return. And though it made us sad, we loved this story of a small, disheveled dog and her beloved sock. (in Collecting) |
