Clowns Without Borders
In screenshot1993, a clown walked into a Croatian refugee camp. He cracked jokes, played the fool, and had more than 700 kids howling with laughter. From that one trip, Clowns Without Borders was formed. In 13 years, this group of volunteer artists has sponsored more than 100 expeditions to places such as Mexico, Haiti, South Africa, and Nepal. In Kosovo, the jesters regaled refugees living in a brick factory. In the U.S., they entertained children and adults in Katrina-ravaged Louisiana and Mississippi. Photos and trip journals illustrate not only the dire conditions that the relief clowns see, they also reveal the results of their work—crowds of smiling and laughing children. And you don't have to be a wise guy to help them. There are plenty of ways to send in the clowns. (in Performing Arts)
