Last Best Places This sumptuous travel guide doesn't fool around. There are three best places left on Earth. And here they are: the Great Barrier Reef, the Tongass National Forest, and the Grand Canyon. If there were a trifecta of ecosystems, that would be it. As the site says, each is the best of its kind, each possesses magnificent tracts of wilderness, and each inspires fierce debate over its preservation. The Minneapolis/St. Paul Star Tribune hosts this companion to a series of profiles from travel reporter Chris Welsch. It presents three-dimensional maps and graphics, shares interviews with Chris, and ventures the top five reasons you should plunge into these places yourself (#1 reason for the Grand Canyon: the "slack-jawed" wonder of the view alone). In the question-and-answer segment, Chris muses not only on the grandeur of these spots, but why they're dangerous and how they surprised him. (in Outdoors) |
