Victoria's  real secret? She was trussed up and bound by whalebone since she was just a little princess. And she wasn't the only one. The Antique Corset Gallery presents a tour through 250 years of rigid undergarments that kept the ladies' waists slim and put the "girls" right where the gents could see them. They started young, as the stiffened child's stays from 1750 can attest. Styles changed over time -- the narrow shape of the 1820s got curvier in the 1830s and even more hourglass in the 1870s, then became straighter in the 1910s. But the idea was always to shape a woman's figure into fashion's ideal of the time. Today, push-up bras and support hose do the same job.
