Mushroom Space Most anything looks majestic when set against the glittering backdrop of space. Think of the wide planes of the Hubble telescope, or the dented menace of the Death Star. And now, perhaps for the first time, think fungi. For somewhere in Finland, a person clearly enamored of the mushroom's shapely form and the night sky's dark expanse has cast image after image of fungi against the scenery of the heavens. We guarantee you've never seen the birch polypore looming so dangerously close, like a battleship on the verge of attack, or the blackening waxcap's bright crimson tip softly illuminating the galaxy's darkness. The hairy bracket hovers overhead, looking set to abduct your bathmat, while the yellow brain may offer the one exception to the majestic rule. It seems to have just suffered an embarrassing eruption of plastic. Space can do that to a fungus. (in Food & Drink) |
