The Montgomery Story Comic We've long enjoyed Ethan Persoff's site, where he entertains us with vintage comics such as "Hooked!," a 1966 morality tale on heroin abuse. Now, in honor of Martin Luther King Day, Ethan offers this comic published in 1956 by the Fellowship of Reconciliation and distributed throughout the American South. Ethan calls the comic "dangerously honest," and considering the time of its publication, we agree. It recounts the story of Dr. King, Rosa Parks, and their Alabama boycott. You'll find sections on life under Jim Crow, the terrors of the KKK, and Gandhi's influence. A breakdown of "how the "Montgomery Method works" begins: "First, remember that you can do something about the situation." Amazingly, a Spanish-language version of the comic was also drawn. Reportedly, only two or three copies exist, and somehow Ethan got his hands on one. He presents it now, for your viewing pleasure. (in U.S. History) |
