Endangered Machinery Haiko Hebig likes factories. For years now, he has loitered outside German operational plants and skulked through the rubble-strewn yards of Europe's abandoned industrial sites. At each location, he has photographed the sprawling buildings and smoke-belching towers with meticulous care. Whether the plant churns through iron or steel or coal, Hebig has been there to capture its portrait. Many of the factories, unsurprisingly, emanate neglect and disarray. One series, Chinese Workers in Portrait, documents the dismantling of an entire German factory before it was shipped to China to be reassembled. Hebig has also witnessed the occasional wildcat strike that flares up outside, and he collects vintage print ads from American steel and coal companies. In our favorite images, though, he lingers over the cogs and wheels that make up the inner organs of his beloved, and endangered, factories. (in Photography) |
