Said the Gramophone In the spring of 2003, a Scotsman named Sean Michaels created one of the world's first MP3 blogs. He dubbed it Said the Gramophone. Later, two Canadians joined forces with Sean. Their mission? To craft "a daily sampler of really good songs." And so they have. On any given day, the site may cajole you with folk music, fling up some "heavy jazz-rock" from Japan, or describe a breathtaking rendition of "My Funny Valentine" once heard in a Latvian jazz club. One entry describes a band called George, which sounds like "amnesiacs reared on caramel-corn and summer romances." Did we mention that these boys know how to write? They consistently hit the perfect note of whimsy and cantankerousness, and they glow with absolute joy over odd, haunted sounds. In one of their few requests, they say "please love and wonder." Easily done. (in Rock and Pop) |
