Pieter Hugo In his recent series The Hyena People of Nigeria, South African photographer Pieter Hugo ventures into a world that Mad Max may have recognized. Here, on roads that stretch endlessly, man and beast pause beneath the glare of a colorless sky. In many of the images, a heavy-lidded and leashed hyena named Mainasara stares at the ground while his human companion gazes at the photographer. Hugo journeyed with this "group of travelling minstrels" and their posse of animals for 10 days. During that time, he captured images so cinematic and alien that it's hard to believe they're not staged. In The Albino Series and Rwanda 2004: Vestiges of a Genocide, Hugo takes us to other parts of Africa, South America, and Europe. In all these places, he captures images of shattering stillness, occasional laughter, and humanity you're unlikely to ever see in a Hollywood production. (in Photography Exhibits) |
