Warlords of Afghanistan Late in 2001, the U.S. sent troops into Afghanistan, and suddenly many of us in the West were hearing of Kabul and Kandahar for the very first time. Concerned over his own and others' ignorance of what was happening, illustrator and "armchair statesman" Matt Weems applied his mind and his drawing pen to the task at hand. He read everything he could about this faraway land, and then he began to draw -- on coasters. On one side of the coaster he depicted leading Afghan figures (among them Mullah Omar, Ahmed Shah Masud, and Hamid Karzai). On the other side, he composed withering profiles of each man. He also portrays outsiders (Osama bin Laden and Pervez Musharraf, for instance) and some weapons. He has an opinion; you may not agree with everything he says, but you'll certainly learn more about these key players -- and you may be inspired to protect your furniture from discoloration, too.
