Dispatches From Tanganyika Dispatches From Tanganyika, the official blog of Poppy Z. Brite, cult novelist and lifelong resident of New Orleans, can now be divided into two parts: pre-Katrina and post-Katrina. Pre-Katrina consists of Brites's funny, snarky, sharp-as-a-tack commentary on everything from what makes her cranky (being called a "food porn" writer), to what makes her unambiguously happy (birds), to gender identification. But, on Saturday, August 27, the blog lurches into a day-by-day account of the approaching storm: the initial decision not to evacuate, the eventual retreat to central Mississippi, the desperate worry for pets left behind. We follow Brite through life without electricity, the rescue of 14 cats and one albino snake, eating MREs, and the ache to return home. She says her city will rise again, and she intends to be there when it happens. We'll be standing by for the dispatches. (in Literature > Authors) |
