Titles Designed by Saul Bass From the 1950s to the '90s, no matter what the aesthetic level of a particular movie, filmmakers could count on at least a few minutes of quality up front if Saul Bass designed the titles. Bass, the preeminent figure in his field over four decades, worked on some of Hollywood's biggest films. Here, screen-by-screen, are 28 of his greatest successes. Whether it's the kineticism of "Goodfellas," the fractured funhouse effect of "Psycho," the cartoonlike quality of "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World," the creepy anatomical voyeurism of "Seconds," or the dizzying spiral motif of "Vertigo," Bass' close attention to underlying psychological themes is in vivid display. Don't forget to catch Hitchcock's obligatory walk-on in the credits of "North by Northwest," and the graffiti-on-a-wall closing of "West Side Story." (in Visual Arts) |
