Sandow and the Golden Age of Iron Men Before Charles Atlas, there was Eugen Sandow. The original muscle man, Sandow pioneered bodybuilding during the late 19th century. He toured the world performing feats of strength, delivering lectures on diet and exercise, and displaying his sculpted physique. Take note, 98-pound weaklings -- we've never touched a barbell and we loved this site. There are wonderful old "get buff quick" magazine ads, all manner of questionable theses on health and fitness, and lots of goofy pictures of big burly guys with moustaches. You'll also find biographical details about various other Strong Men of Yore, including George "The Russian Lion" Hackenschmidt and Alexander Zass, aka The Amazing Samson. (in Sports) |
