Smithsonian Global Sound The Smithsonian Collection, its digital archives bursting with beautiful music from all over the world, has decided to get into the download game. Call it an iTunes for global music fans. Search by geography or instrument to sample dollar downloads, or comb through hundreds of distinct cultural groups, from Abung (Indonesia) to Zuni Pueblo (New Mexico). Much of this material comes from the celebrated Smithsonian Folkways Recordings; you'll find everything from field recordings of Dogon Funeral Rites in Mali to an Angela Davis interview from 1971. A sleek interface, plenty of explicative material, and a chance to sample the wares make the site a joy to browse, even if you're not buying. (in Music) |
