Raid on Deerfield: The Many Stories of 1704 Early on a cold winter day in 1704, a coalition of several hundred French and Native forces attacked an English settlement at Deerfield, Massachusetts. The raiders took 112 settlement members hostage, and then marched the captives -- including women and children -- some 300 miles to Canada. Many of the Deerfield inhabitants eventually returned, though one-third elected to remain with their one-time captors. As the years passed, the bold raid was characterized as either "a brutal attack ... or a justified military action," but this site refuses to see it as a one-sided story. Through audio, maps, profiles, and a sumptuous story menu, Raid on Deerfield explores perspectives of the attack and its place in early American history. Then it steps back, leaving you to make up your own mind about what led up to those pre-dawn hours, so many years ago. (in U.S. History) |
