Photos of an Unknown Family A fascinating survey of middle-class life, compliments of the Huntington Beach swap meet. The mother is straight out of the Far Side: A full-bodied woman with a beehive and a penchant for emphatic eyewear. The Archie Bunker dad wears thick utility glasses and a cigarette behind his ear. But it's the Sixties and the times they are a changin', so the son -- turtleneck intellectual, Volkswagen vagabond, polyester player -- is searching for himself. The family plays cards, visits Paris, tends the store. It's all real, and it's all American. Other photographic gems lurk throughout the site. Don't miss "The Player," a set of framed pimpin' portraits, and the mystifying "Something's Going on in the Park," which feels like a real-life version of "Blow-Up." We also enjoyed the teenage archeology of "We Found a Guitar Case With a Bunch of Stuff Inside." (in Collecting) |
