ˇAzúcar! The Life and Music of Celia Cruz The indomitable Cuban singer Celia Cruz began many of her concerts with the cry of "¡azúcar!" (sugar!) Her throaty howl and wide-ranging repertoire reflected the food, music, and history of her native land. Discover the songs and life of the queen of Latin rhythm at the American Museum of History's tribute site. Follow Cruz's childhood in Cuba, her exile in 1960, and the blossoming of her career in New York City. Watch classic video segments; listen to song excerpts; and browse through photos, album covers, and memorabilia from Havana's Tropicana club. (We particularly recommend the 1969 selection of Ms. Cruz performing "Aquarius" with Tito Puente.) And then, finally, at the end, slip into Celia Cruz's dressing room and take a gander at the shoes and dresses that completed the queen's flamboyant onstage image. (in Music History) |
