The Teenie Harris Archive Project For 40 years, Teenie Harris roamed the streets of Pittsburgh, peered through his camera, and documented the city's life for the Pittsburgh Courier, one of the largest Black newspapers in the U.S. From dropping in on a cocktail party to documenting the Black Panther Party on the march, Harris seems to have been everywhere. Through his lens, we see Rosebud Beauty Salon (is that Rosebud herself standing out front?), a relaxed Dizzy Gillespie, and the long walk of the picket lines. A young Nixon and a concerned Eleanor Roosevelt both make an appearance. View Pittsburgh's streets, storefronts, and theaters -- and then encounter the people who made the metropolis their home: Homemakers, sailors, the boys down at the bar, a bathing beauty. This archive shares a vital look at African-American history, and makes for a moving portrait of the United States. (in Photographers) |
