The Campaign for Innocent Victims in Conflict Marla Ruzicka, founder of The Campaign for Innocent Victims in Conflict or CIVIC, was by all accounts a tireless advocate for those who were unlucky enough to find themselves in the middle of a war zone. Ms. Ruzicka, just 28, was recently killed by a car bomb in Iraq. She leaves behind an organization that has secured millions of dollars in compensation for civilian victims of bombing in Afghanistan and Iraq; one can only imagine the difference this has made in their upended lives. While press accounts of Ruzicka's bravery, perseverance, and generosity are numerous, none has yet been able to fully explain why a person of her background and talents would intentionally travel to the most dangerous places on Earth just to help those who have barely registered in our ongoing national dialogue. That has been left for all of us to ponder, on our own. (in Issues and Causes) |
