Quonset Huts Following the end of World War II, you could buy a Quonset hut from the Navy for a mere $1000. But what would you do with a building that looks like half of a giant soda can laying on its side? You could try to beef up the facade and turn it into a movie theater. Or, heck, forget about the goofy facade, just add a marquee with some creative spelling. Moviegoers are sure to flock to the next double feature. Many of these humble prefabs, intended for temporary use, still stand after 60 years. With their open interiors, Quonset huts have proven adaptable enough to serve truckers, congregrations, and cars. Designed for efficient shipping and assembly, these tin can constructions were the epitome of ingenuity in their day. (in Architecture) |
