Eric Straw's Masks Next Halloween, before you strap on that plastic Spiderman mask with the elastic band designed by the Marquis de Sade, think about what you could be wearing. Eric Straw fashions his whimsical masks out of strong corrugated cardboard. Like any good Frenchman, he has a complicated theory about his creations' meaning, describing them as an "auto-ethno-graphical experience" investigating "nothing other than the imaginary material of the maker." All right, but just check out the guy with the doggie on his head or the Mr-Potato-Head-after-a-triple-espresso-looking thing. Or the countenance that looks like the product of Picasso on a controlled substance. Then enjoy all of Straw's colorful, vibrant, and droll designs. And rethink your facial covering for next Halloween. (in Visual Arts) |
