The Guillotine Headquarters This extensively researched and somewhat discomfiting historical resource is curated by Jorn Fabricius, who holds an abiding interest in the guillotine for its "history and mechanical construction." Follow its evolution from early incarnations (like the Halifax Gibbet and the euphemistically named Maiden) until its last use in (gasp!) 1977. Jorn graciously provides photographic evidence of the changes over time to the apparatus in question. The mechanically inclined might enjoy his descriptions, sometimes in grisly detail, of the workings of this ghoulish instrument. Although some parts of this site are not for the squeamish or faint of heart, it provides a fascinating look at a time in history that some would prefer to forget. (in Crime)
