Deafness In Disguise The hearing aid is where technology and vanity shake hands. As the introduction to this gallery notes, the symptoms of hearing loss are primarily social, and many want their invisible handicap to remain that way. This stigma has inspired some ingeniously disguised hearing aids. Highlights of the 19th century collection include aids disguised as flowers, fans, and even a ringlet of hair. As the technology improved in the 20th century, several devices were concealed as purses, cameras, and jewelry. By 1953, hearing aids were incorporated into glasses and at the start of the new millennium, were considered fashion accessories. This huge collection of devices and advertisements does a remarkable job of tracing our aural history. (in Society & Culture) |
