America in the 1930s The American Studies Department at the University of Virginia presents this smart, punchy, and highly accessible collection of multimedia scholarship focusing on the Depression. Click around the Index Page to relive the days of hoovervilles, speakeasies, blue plate specials, and hep cats. The Cinema Section, which features articles on the best gangster flicks, screwball comedies, and Hollywood musicals ever made, also features a great selection of clips from classics like Little Caesar and Stagecoach. You'll find more multimedia goodies in the Radio Section, with audio clips from old friends like the Lone Ranger, Little Orphan Annie, and a very young Superman. But the highlight of the collection is the haunting documentary photography of Walker Evans and the Farm Security Administration Projects. (in U.S. History) |
