From the Home Front and the Front Lines
The screenshotVeterans History Project looks at the human side of war through memorabilia collected by soldiers and their families from World War I through the Persian Gulf War. Vintage photos feature military brothers, WW II planes with nicknames like Dame Satan II, the infamous Pork Chop Hill standoff, and the woman honored as Soldier of the Year in 1982. Diaries and scrapbooks recount experiences in 1919 Europe as well as WW II in Africa and the Pacific theater. Romantic letters reveal the heartache of war, while cartoon-decked envelopes and family newspapers brought smiles to those in the trenches. Flags, military papers, and items such as historic newspaper clippings flesh out the picture of the warfront and the home front. This exhibit makes war about more than just strategy and artillery -- it shows the real people on the battlefield and those at home who they fought to protect. (in Government > Military)
