WebExhibits: van Gogh's Letters Sure, he could paint a mean sunflower or evoke a stylized starry night, but who knew van Gogh was a prolific writer? Indeed, the famously reclusive one-eared genius penned copious letters to his friends and loved ones, revealing much of his inner turmoil in each intimate missive. More so than in his haunting self-portraits, we see the demons he wrestled with including depression, hallucination, masochism, and even impotence. We also get a keen sense of van Gogh's lifestyle and sensitive personality through his views on clergy, art inspiration, fashion, and women. To his brother Theo, he dispenses detailed, ponderous advice on mistresses and love affairs. While the artist wielded the paintbrush with bold, vivid strokes, a more delicate and refined hand is revealed in his fluid penmanship. (in Arts & Humanities > Artists) |
