Voices of Civil Rights On the heels of the 50th anniversary of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling, the battle for civil rights has re-emerged as a hot topic. This engaging site from the AARP and the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights encourages us to remember the past struggles for equality, while reminding us that some struggles still endure. Visit the history section for an excellent timeline of important milestones in the fight for equal rights, and then make your way over to the Voices page to read first-hand accounts of the bitter taste of racism in America. Included are stories of a black woman attempting to dine out after segregation was proclaimed illegal and a young woman's realization that segregation would not (and could not) prevail You can also learn about civil rights issues in 2004 and the progress that is still needed. As the battles of the '50s and '60s fade into history, this wonderful site steps in to make sure the stories of the not-so-distant past are not forgotten. (in U.S. History) |
