The Other Hawai'i The fabled sailing canoe Hokule'a is renowned for its harrowing voyages to Tahiti and Easter Island by way of celestial navigation and observation of weather patterns, "wayfinding" techniques early Polynesians used in their conquest of the Pacific. Its latest mission strikes closer to home, in the remote northwestern stretch of the Hawaiian archipelago. This ancient collection of azure atolls and coral reefs is home to countless Hawaiian species found only in Hawaii and remains a mystery even to locals. The crew members of Hokule'a seek to educate youngsters on these forgotten treasures by way of an expedition journal, photos, stories, and a telephone Q&A. The only visitors on these isles will be the crew who hope to meet a friendly monk seal or sea turtle swimming by. (in Environment & Nature)
