4AD - The First 20 Years Record labels come and go. Few have a creative vision that endures. However, indie rock label 4AD ruled the '80s and '90s with a roster of bands the cool kids adopted and adored. 4AD also dominated the competition when it came to cover art -- their identifiable CD covers were hipster must-haves in the heyday of "alternative" rock. With a side-scrolling pictorial of each year's CD releases, this rich site traces the 20-year history of the label. You'll run into bands that strike a chord in your rock memory bank, including The Pixies, Cocteau Twins, and Lush. You'll also see some choice covers devoted to bands consigned to the great used bin in the sky. Most of all, you'll simply appreciate the eye-appealing covers of a label that kept album art alive in the late 20th century. (in Visual Arts) |
