Art and Politics of Arthur Szyk The name Arthur Szyk may not be familiar to most people, but a new exhibit at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum introduces this little-known Jewish artist. A gifted illustrator, Szyk recognized the threat of Nazism early and devoted his career to combating its spread. During World War II, his derisive political drawings and cartoons of Hitler and the Nazis ran in American newspapers and magazines, earning Szyk the reputation as a "one-man army." One of his most powerful pieces, Satan Leads the Ball, Szyk presented a "rogues' gallery of Axis leaders who blindly follow the Devil down the path of evil." Other pieces are less detailed, but retain the solemn power of his more intricate work. This site offers audio to give further context to the incredible life of this artist, wartime caricaturist, and Holocaust documenter. (in Visual Arts) |
