Africa U.S.A. American families' affinity for larger-than-life tourist destinations can't be denied. Witness Legoland, Busch Gardens, and even Dollywood -- we can't seem to get enough of fried Twinkies, log rides, and colorful yet creepy costumed characters. But the granddaddy of all attractions is the defunct 300-acre Africa U.S.A. amusement park in picturesque Boca Raton, Florida. In its glory days, the park boasted 95-cent Jungle Train rides, lagoon and tropical garden tours, and cageless wildlife roaming about. From 1953-1961, the affable chimp Princess Margaret, cheetahs Mojah and Mbili, and a pesky giraffe known as "Moneybags" held court in the Floridian savannah. Sure, a bit of "Me Tarzan, you Jane" smarmy charm existed throughout the park, but recreations of Zambezi Falls and Watusi Geyser, as well as cultivated tropical gardens surely wowed spectators. This call of the wild is definitely worth revisiting. (in Entertainment > Amusement and Theme Parks) |
