The Making of a Brick Dispelling the myth that Lego bricks are scraped off magic trees by tiny Danish elves, this interactive site gives the story straight from the factory's mouth. Click through the manufacturing steps, and enjoy the birth of a brick. It begins with granules of brightly colored plastic, which are trucked into giant silos. The plastic is fed into molding machines where the granules are heated into melted goo (yes, that's the technical term). Next, the machine applies intense pressure to turn the goo into the nifty little bricks we know and love. Some pieces are adorned with decals, and Lego minifigs (people) are assembled and decorated by more machines. Finally everything is sorted into elaborate boxed sets. The whole process is automated and robotized -- human hands never touch Legos until they arrive in your home to be scattered around by kids of all ages. (in Toys) |
