For Our Matchless Friends As more and more Americans stub out that butt for good, complimentary matchbooks are fading into the realm of the 8-track tape. Thankfully, this site provides a flammable repository of vintage, story-telling matchbooks. A barefoot hillbilly celebrates victory for the Country Kitchen by hoisting a delicious hamburger high over his straw hat. Fans of '50s kitsch and Tiki huts are sure to strike it rich with examples from the bars and lounges of the greater L.A. area. One matchbook advertises a "scientific restaurant" featuring griddle cakes (and no tipping!), while another one cruelly mocks chickens. Speaking of our fine feathered friends, the mysteries of ghostly pearl chickens may never be known. Back in the day, you could even sneak a cig at the happiest place on Earth -- Disneyland's long departed tobacco shop and Casa de Fritos are lovingly remembered. Close the cover before striking this matchless site from James Lileks. (in Collecting) |
