Glam Rock Baby Back when corporate rock and vapid disco ruled the earth, glam rock reared its flashy head. Combining a late '50s jukebox vibe with platform shoes and wild costumes, glam was an English phenomenon that began in 1970 with T-Rex's hit "Ride a White Swan" and was furthered by the band Sweet in 1971. Then glam hit the big time in 1972, when Marc Bolan became the most popular male vocalist in the U.K. since Elvis. Alas, that year also saw the rise of fake glam a la Elton John. But the imposters couldn't hold a candle to the real glammsters like David Bowie, Gary Glitter, and Alice Cooper. In 1973, glam got its theme song, "Ballroom Blitz" by Sweet, but by 1975 the glitter had begun to tarnish. Glam faded away, but you can find its influence in punk, goth, and other music trends. So get it on, bang a gong. (in Rock and Pop) |
