Escaperail Many people consider them eyesores, but some Chicago photographers find eerie beauty in the fire escape, that "overlooked vestige of the urban experience." This site overflows with images of skeletal escape routes. Antiquated and rusting, some fire escapes have lost their original purpose and now overflow with potted plants. Others barely seem to cling to their buildings. But when their steel rails are illuminated by orange streetlights or silhouetted against blue skies, the hypnotic geometry of the escape rail shines through. Metal staircases are draped across buildings like ivy, and escape ledges protrude into narrow alleys. Shadow and light play across the fire escapes, and the stairs beckon downward as if to say "Get out while you still can." (in Photography Exhibits) |
