ESA: Mars Express Jump aboard the Mars Express, Europe's bold and exciting interplanetary endeavor. While missions to Mars are old-hat for the United States and NASA, our friends across the pond are out to stake their claim on the red planet's rugged terrain. The first probe Beagle 2 blasted off from the historic Baikonur Cosmodrome launch pad on June 3 and is already transmitting heady images from space. You can track the mission's progress via hi-res images and video while familiarizing yourself with its high-tech payload. Set to land December 25, 2003, the Beagle will act as a planetary detective, surveying the dramatic Martian landscape and scouting for locked-away water resources, which, if found, means there could be life on the planet. While this is undoubtedly the European Space Agency's baby, Mars Express would never have left the ground without international collaboration and a common dream. (in Mars) |
