African Ceremonies
In screenshotthis exceptional exhibit, photographers Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher thoughtfully record the vanishing customs of tribal African cultures. Ten years in the making, the collection spans the continent of Africa and captures sacred birth, marriage, and death rituals. See how a Surma father and his children express themselves through body painting, and witness an unmarried Sudanese Dinka man showing off a beaded corset -- his most coveted possession. In Mali, a Fulani bride wears her wealth in gold and amber, while Wodaabe men in Niger paint their faces with red ocher to compete at the Geerewol Beauty Dance. The people of Burkina Faso wear Spinning Bobo funeral masks in ritual dances to help the dead on their way to the spirit world. With rich colors and generous detail, these photos preserve traditional customs that have survived into the modern age. (in Photography Exhibits)
