This Far by Faith In this dramatic six-part series, PBS follows the African-American spiritual journey as it spans three centuries and two vastly different worlds. We learn that while traditional African religions shared the belief in a Supreme Being, the myths varied greatly by country. In the New World, those enslaved were forced to creatively mix, match, and adapt their beliefs and rituals to stand united despite their diverse backgrounds. Through Emancipation in the mid-1800s to Jim Crow, African-Americans cleaved greatly to Christianity as parallels of bondage, freedom, and salvation were drawn. From the rise of Black Power in 1966 to today's interfaith pilgrimages, the search for greater meaning in ordinary lives continues. In-depth profiles, extensive resources, and discussions by viewers help us understand others while upholding our own beliefs. (in Religion & Spirituality) |
