SFMOMA: The Legacy of Phyllis Wattis
Is screenshota porcelain urinal high art? Can an erased drawing still be considered a masterpiece? While much of modern art is intentionally provocative, it often leaves us scratching our heads. Thanks to the generosity of cultural philanthropist Phllyis Wattis, SFMOMA now boasts 10 modern works for public speculation and dissection. Featuring pieces from the likes of Warhol, Mondrian, and Duchamp, this interactive exhibit encourages you to challenge what you see, or don't see, as in the case of Robert Rauschenberg's Erased DeKooning. Learn about the big idea behind Warhol's murals of Liz Taylor and Jackie Kennedy. Uncover the motivation behind sculptor Eve Hesse's experiments in polyester resin, fiberglass, and rope. Even if black tire tracks on a scroll aren't your idea of beauty, these works will no doubt spark lively discussion, as was the intention of the artists who created them. (in Art History)
