Experiencing War: Veterans History Project War is never black and white. It's sobering to read heartfelt accounts from American veterans of all eras who've stared war directly in the eye. Having survived the risk of death and harrowing physical and mental tests, these veterans reflect on the grit it took to protect our freedoms. Army nurse Rhona Marie Scott talks of playing God in Vietnam. It was her job to decide which patients received treatment and which were passed over. Senator Chuck Hagel describes the smell of the jungle and the terror of a "war with no rules." Korean War vet James Walsh offers a brutal recollection of a misunderstood war, while WWII vet Violet Hill Gordon speaks of serving proudly as a woman of color. The Library of Congress hopes to make this site a place where both veterans and civilians will recount their individual memories, keeping these precious stories from being lost.
