The Currency Gallery Did you know the familiar U.S. greenback hasn't always been green, and it wasn't always worth a whole buck? Facts like these can be found on this site all about the Benjamins. It includes a detailed anatomy of colonial money, the first legal tender, Confederate dollars, and everything right up to today's Federal Reserve notes. In 1955, American currency first saw the words "In God We Trust" regularly printed on every bill, and since 1928, U.S. money has shrunk in size by 25%. Martha Washington remains the only notable female to have her portrait on U.S. paper money, but women have long appeared as Treasury Department signatories. If you're a fan of cash, no doubt you'll be seeing green with the fascinating facts found here. (in Social Science) |
