League of Nations Photo Archive Inspired by President Wilson's Fourteen Points speech in 1918, the League of Nations was the forerunner of today's United Nations. This organization tried to prevent a repeat of World War I by pledging all member states to submit their disputes for arbitration before resorting to war. Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and connected to the Permanent Court of International Justice, the League included 60 member nations. The United States never joined, even though many Americans were involved in the League's creation. This extensive photo gallery from Indiana University catalogs the League's personalities, assemblies, delegations, the Secretariat, and more. An illustrated album tells the League's founding story, and a timeline presents a chronology up to the League's dissolution in 1946. While this may seem like old news, the early 20th-century conflicts mentioned here are relevant to today's disputes and diplomatic efforts, particularly in the Middle East. (in History) |
