Manor House Reality TV explores class, gender, and a whole lot of British history in this PBS show and companion site. One family plays privileged aristocracy, while 14 hearty souls are their servants. Stepping back to 1905, these modern Brits inhabit a country estate to learn about the Gilded Age before World War I. Elaborate rules of etiquette and hierarchy dominate every aspect of life, while an unrelenting production schedule calls for constant housework. An architect takes to his new job as a butler despite the endless duties, but the position of scullery maid is so hard that the first two women quit the project. Visit the past by picturing your own life in 1905 and testing your snob quotient. With abundant historical resources, entertaining video, and a beautiful virtual tour, the Manor House provides a fascinating look at how both upstairs and downstairs once lived. (in Television) |
