Hog Heaven: Celebrating 100 Years of the Harley-Davidson The motorcycle affectionately known as the "hog" celebrates its 100th birthday this year. Yes, the Harley-Davidson Motor Company launched its road warrior in 1903 -- the same year Henry Ford incorporated the Ford Motor Company and the Wright brothers first took to the air. Brought to you by the Library of Congress, this retrospective explains how the modest "transport vehicle" became an American icon. Start your engine with a collection of early Harley ads, including one that touts the Model 11-F, an 11-horsepower, 3-speed machine for $275 (a price that might buy a couple of tires for your hog in 2003). Other image galleries show Harleys at work, war, and play. If you need to brush up on hog history, articles offer a primer on what it means to ride the open road on an American classic.
