Band Names The inspiration behind some band names is obvious, while other names prove to be a bit more enigmatic, etymologically speaking. This site does an admirable job of identifying the namesakes, inspirations, and hidden meanings behind all those cleverly named bands of past and present. Care to hazard a guess on the stories behind some of the less-than-obvious ones? Let's start with abbreviations. Quick, what does UB40 stand for? (Hint: Think starving British artists.) How about the Russian-girl duo t.A.t.U? (Okay, so maybe that was a trick question). Many musicians have drawn liberally from myths and legends: Incubus was named after the male devil, Foo Fighters was the slang term for UFOs during WWII, and Nine Inch Nails was the rumored length of coffin nails. Edified? Convinced? Still scratching your Portishead? Poke around for more answers to music's big questions. And if you have some facts to share, send them in. (in Music) |
